Born and raised in the South, Michael Nelson developed an early appreciation of craftsmanship through his grandparents’ award-winning quilts. His childhood was spent at the peddle of his grandmother’s sewing machine while his grandfather taught him pattern and construction techniques. Through this mentorship, he learned early on that fabric can tell stories and connect generations. This appreciation carried over into his design work while studying at Parsons and then through the launch of his brand AMIROK.
AMIROK is a menswear brand that focuses on hand-crafted textiles from around the world. Spending six months out of the year travelling, Michael visits with every artisan to explain the application of their work within the collection. Using century-old looms, new fabrics are developed and created specifically each season using traditional weaving techniques. The ultimate goal of AMIROK is to form cultural bridges through design.
